Designing an Exotic Wood Terrace in Corsica

Aesthetic realization

An exotic terrace is very appealing due to its aesthetics. Exotic woods are noble and very warm. Their color is highly pigmented.

For this project, the challenge was to find a way to install on an existing tiled slab. The idea was also to hide visible cables and pipes.

Some edges of the project are very close to the bay windows, so we had to find solutions to fit right against the windows while taking existing thresholds into account.

1. What is the best exotic wood for building a deck?

For an exotic wood deck, several species stand out for their durability, resistance to moisture, and aesthetics. Here are some of the best options:

  • Ipé: Native to South America, Ipé is very dense and resistant. It is naturally rot-resistant and offers excellent durability against the elements.
  • Cumaru: Also known as “Brazilian teak,” Cumaru is a hard wood with a beautiful color ranging from reddish-brown to yellow-brown. It is very stable and resistant.
  • Teak: Known for its resistance to water and insects, teak is often used for decks and outdoor furniture. It has a beautiful golden color that can be maintained with regular care.
  • Padauk: This African wood is very dense and durable, with a color ranging from red to pinkish-brown. It is also very stable and stain-resistant.

2. How to maintain an exotic wood deck?

Maintaining an exotic wood deck is essential to preserve its beauty and durability. Here are some key steps for effective maintenance:

Regular Cleaning:

  • Sweeping: Regularly remove leaves and debris to prevent dirt buildup.
  • Washing: Use water and a soft, non-metallic brush to clean the surface. You can add a suitable anti-moss product if necessary.

Restoration:

  • Brightening Products: Apply a wood brightener to restore the natural color of the wood. Follow the product instructions for application time and rinsing.

Protection:

  • Saturator: Apply a saturator after cleaning to protect the wood from UV rays and moisture. This helps maintain the wood’s natural color.
  • Protective Oil: An oil can also be applied to give a wet look and prevent graying.

Seasonal Maintenance:

  • Spring and Autumn: Perform a thorough maintenance twice a year, before and after summer, to prepare the wood for changing weather conditions.

3. What are the standards and regulations to follow when building an exotic wood deck?

Building a deck on adjustable pedestals with exotic wood requires adhering to certain standards and regulations to ensure safety, durability, and compliance with local regulations. Here are the main points to consider:

Local Regulations:

  • PLU (Local Urban Plan): Check with your local town hall for specific rules in your municipality. Some areas may have particular restrictions, especially regarding height and aesthetics.

Declarations and Permits:

  • No formalities if the deck is less than 5 m² and at ground level.
  • Prior declaration for a deck between 5 m² and 20 m².
  • Building permit for a deck over 20 m² or elevated more than 60 cm.

Construction Standards:

  • Minimum Height: A minimum height of 64 mm is recommended to ensure the deck’s stability.
  • Accessibility for People with Reduced Mobility (PMR): If the deck needs to be accessible, comply with accessibility standards, such as a maximum slope of 6% for ramps and a minimum width of 90 cm.

Installation Techniques:

  • Ground Stabilization: Use adjustable pedestals placed on a geotextile to prevent vegetation growth under the deck.
  • Drainage: Ensure a minimum slope of 1 to 2% to drain rainwater and avoid stagnation.
